"Work Brings Freedom." Posted above the entrance of most Nazi concentration camps. Of course now we know that phrase was a lie. Really, who was brought to Auschwitz, Breslau, Danzig or Treblinka to work? The only freedom that was granted was death.

I based this on a classic piece of printed Nazi propaganda. I removed the second noble looking SS man and the panzers and replaced them with something more in touch with reality. In the original piece, the eyes were completely shaded over. I made them detectable here. No eyes suggests anonymity, and therefore a lack of personal responsibility. The Reich as an abstract entity didn't bring about the Holocaust; the forceful, fanatical men with guns did. Without them the concept of National Socialism was simply a floating, invisible ghost. I feel the sense of personal responsibility should be prevalent.

Notice the surviving woman in the mass grave, hoisting herself up by grabbing on to the ledge. As she grabs the ledge and tries to stand on her own, she also grabs the man's shoulder as he looks away in contempt of the tiny wretches below. She seems to be begging him for help, for an explanation, yet all he can do is posture and ignore her.

I'm looking at this, and reading your explination. Something just didn't seem sincere about this, so I checked out the rest of your artwork and realized that you just wanted to draw some messed up sad shit, which is the theme of all of your work. What you have done is wrong, shame one you.
You're right, I like drawing messed up sad shit. It's hard to draw a picture about something like this without it being sad and messed up.

You know jack shit about me or my intentions, and you can shove your pretentious judgements up your ass.

ansikten vrids till ilska andra vrids till skräck
När trollens arme rider fram i en storm av blod och träck

Så faller man efter man
Så viner en vind av blod och lem
I will do no such thing
nice drawing. great detail and shading.

I'm 50% Irish, the other half is French. I like to get drunk and surrender.
Your technique has definitely improved, as well as the thought towards content in your work. The work that I have seen on DA anyway.

I especially like the woman grabbing on to the soldiers shoulder. It makes the piece a lot more interesting to look at, instead of if it was just a soldier standing there with all this nasty stuff happening in the background. It makes the soldier more a part of the piece this way.

Two points of critique I would like to make, if you do not mind -

The soldiers eyes seem somewhat sloppy, or rushed. A bit more detail as far as the whites of his eyes, or the skin and eyebrows/lashes around them could bring a bit more life to them.

Second - I think the Star of David floating in the smoke is pretty un-necessary, and kind of awkward. Everybody knows that the Jews were the main focus of the Holocaust. I hope Im not sounding like an ass, it just seems like that Star of David was a quick solution to an obvious fact.

Aaannnyways, it is a great piece Chris. Im happy to see some of your work after such a long hiatus. I hope art school is going well for you (if that is, indeed, what you are still doing), and would love to see more.

If sticks and stone will break your bones, but names will never harm you, what exactly is holding me back from beating you down with a big giant stick?
Thanks very much for the imput... I may be a bit more active now that I'm drawing again. I seriously haven't been drawing in months (school is basically all gestures and 3d now). Been burned out on drawing for a while.

I agree though, the eye needs a lot of work... As for the star, the only hope I have of changing that is photoshop... I draw hard. =P The only justification for that was to fill in space, which I should have known would only be a mistake. I also gouged it in there before blending everything in the "collage" together.

I'm looking at this, and reading your explinnashun (sp?). Something just didn't seem sincere about this, so I checked out the rest of your artwork and realized that I'm a sad person who has no idea what I'm talking about, but loves giving people shit behind a curtain of anonymity on the internet. What you have done is not exactly what I would have done. Shame on you.

Between the conception and the creation, between the emotion and the response falls the shadow.
Ah, someone else who appreciates what a badass Rommel was. =P
